Professional teeth whitening (bleaching) lightens the natural color of your enamel using peroxide-based gels, either in a single in-office visit or with custom take-home trays worn over a couple of weeks. It's typically the least invasive cosmetic treatment in dentistry: nothing is drilled, bonded or removed.
How much whiter your teeth can get depends on what caused the color in the first place. Surface stains from coffee, tea and tobacco usually respond well; deeper, intrinsic discoloration can take longer or call for a different approach, which is exactly the kind of thing a dentist determines in an exam.
The honest limits of this preview
Color only. Does not change tooth shape or position. A preview can't see bone, bite, gum health or anything beneath the surface. Only a clinical exam can. Treat it as a conversation starter for your dentist, never as a promised result.
Worth asking your dentist
- Is my discoloration surface staining or intrinsic, and does that change which whitening you'd recommend?
- What shade change is realistic for my teeth, and how long should it last?
- I have fillings or crowns on front teeth. How will whitening affect the match?
