Teeth wear down (from grinding, from acid, from decades of use), and as the edges flatten and shorten, smiles start to read older than they are. The change is so gradual that most people only notice it in old photos.
Restoring worn edges with bonding, veneers or crowns rebuilds the length and the youthful shape. If grinding caused the wear, a dentist will usually want to address that too, or the restorations wear down the same way the enamel did.
